West Bengal: An important decision has come to light amid the ongoing voter list verification process before the elections in West Bengal. For the first time, the appellate tribunal constituted in the state has accepted Aadhaar card as a valid document of identity. After this decision, there is a big relief to those people whose names were removed from the voter list due to technical reasons.
The matter came to light when a person's name was removed from the voter list even though he had multiple identity documents. After examining all the facts, the tribunal held that the Aadhaar card and other documents were sufficient to prove his identity.
Actually, during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), names of many people were removed from the voter list. Meanwhile, due to difference in the name of a person, he was left out of the list. Although he was already a voter and his name was registered in the list for years.
When the matter reached the tribunal, the question arose whether documents like Aadhaar card were sufficient to prove identity or not. The matter became more serious when the Election Commission did not give clear reasons.
The tribunal found during the hearing that apart from the Aadhar card, the person concerned also had passport, driving license and other documents. His identity was found to be the same in all the documents.
On this basis, the tribunal said that it is not appropriate to remove someone's name on technical grounds, especially when there is strong identity evidence. After this, the Election Commission was instructed to add his name again to the list.
After this decision, the biggest question raised was whether Aadhaar card proves citizenship? On this, the Supreme Court has already clarified that Aadhaar is only a document of identity and not of citizenship. That means a person can prove his identity through Aadhaar, but it does not prove that he is a citizen of India.
This decision of the tribunal is being seen as an example. This may provide relief to those people whose names have been removed from the voter list due to mistakes or technical reasons.
However, the controversy regarding voter list in West Bengal is not over yet. This issue is still hot due to the removal of a large number of names and political allegations. In such a situation, this decision can play an important role in the future cases.
